English translation of the Hanuman Chalisa:
couplet
O Lord Hanuman, the embodiment of knowledge and virtue,
I bow to you, the one who illuminates the three worlds.
O messenger of Lord Rama, of immeasurable strength,
Son of Anjani, known as the son of the wind god.
O mighty and brave warrior,
Destroyer of evil thoughts, companion of good thoughts.
With a golden complexion and auspicious form,
Wearing earrings and curly hair.
In your hands you carry a mace and a flag,
On your shoulders you wear a sacred thread of munja grass.
Son of Kesari, blessed by Lord Shiva,
Your brilliance and glory bind the entire world.
Learned, wise, and extremely clever,
Eager to carry out Lord Rama's work.
A lover of Lord Rama's stories,
With Rama, Lakshmana, and Sita in your heart.
Assuming a subtle form, you showed yourself to Sita,
Assuming a fierce form, you ravaged Lanka.
Assuming a gigantic form, you slew the demons,
And accomplished Lord Rama's work.
You brought the Sanjivani herb and revived Lakshmana,
Lord Raghubir was overjoyed and embraced you.
Righteous Lord Rama said many times,
"You are as dear to me as Bharata."
Son of Kesari, blessed by Lord Shiva's feet,
Your brilliance and glory bind the entire world.
With a beautiful form and radiant beauty,
You appeared to Jatayu, who gave up his life for Lord Rama.
Bringing the Sanjivani herb, you flew back,
Seeing Lakshmana unconscious, you were filled with fear.
Dhumraksha and Lankini created a veil of smoke,
Plunging all of Lanka into great darkness.
Only those who worship you, O Raghupati,
Can appease your anger, O Lord with the monkey face.
With your strength, you protect Mother Sita,
All your deeds are auspicious.
You are the protector of those who fear nothing,
The giver of the eight siddhis and nine nidhis.
You possess the elixir of Lord Rama,
May you always remain a servant of Lord Raghubir.
By reciting your hymns, one attains Lord Rama,
And forgets the sorrows of many lifetimes.
At the end of time, one goes to the abode of Lord Raghubir,
Where one is called a devotee of Lord Hari.
One should not dwell on other deities,
For Hanuman alone can grant all happiness.
All troubles are dispelled and all sorrows vanish,
For those who remember Hanuman, the mighty warrior.
couplet
Hail, hail, hail to Hanuman, the Lord of monkeys,
Be merciful, O Master, like a guru.
Whoever recites this Chalisa seventy times,
Will be freed from bondage and attain great happiness.
Whoever reads this Hanuman Chalisa,
Will be blessed with success, Tulsidas bears witness.
Tulsidas is forever a servant of Lord Hari,
Make your abode in my heart, O Lord.
Pawan Tanay Sankat Haran,
Mangal Murti Roop.
Ram Lakhan Sita Sahit,
Hriday Basahu Sur Bhoop.
O son of the wind god, remover of obstacles,
Embodiment of auspicious form.
With Rama, Lakshmana, and Sita,
Reside in my heart, O king of the gods.
